"Re-imagination of 'All You Need Is Kill' to Sport a Strikingly Surreal Anime Style"
All right, let's talk about the upcoming anime adaptation of the sci-fi novel, "All You Need is Kill," produced by Studio 4°C. This trippy new series promises to offer a fresh take on the story, and I, for one, am excited.
If you haven't heard of the novel by Hiroshi Sakurazaka, you might be familiar with its Hollywood adaptation from 2014, "Edge of Tomorrow," starring Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt. The plot revolves around an alien invasion of Earth, and a soldier whose time looping predicament leads him on a quest to end the war.
In addition to the movie, we've had an outstanding manga adaptation I took a look at a few years back. While the film took some creative liberties with the original novel, the manga was remarkably faithful.
The manga also nailed the protagonists' power armor, which they don to fight the aliens. Compared to the somewhat strange, DIY-looking powered suits in the movie, it was a vast improvement.
What sets this new anime apart is its unique narrative perspective and intriguing art style. Though Studio 4°C takes care of the anime production, Warner Bros. Japan is funding it, which is noteworthy since Warner Bros. also bankrolled the mind-blowing "Scavenger's Reign."
This fresh take on "All You Need is Kill" has a similar otherworldly feel to "Scavenger's Reign," and I am here for it. However, I do hope that someday, we'll see a more accurate adaptation of the novel's plot in anime or live-action form.
The manga did a fantastic job with the story's intense action sequences, and while this new anime looks set to deliver impactful action, I'm a little disappointed it's not a more faithful retelling of the original plot.
For now, brace yourselves for a fresh take on "All You Need is Kill." It's shaping up to be an intriguing watch, no matter the narrative direction it chooses to head in.
Stay tuned to my updates on X, Facebook, and YouTube. I'm also in charge of Mecha Damashii and currently featured in the Giant Robots exhibition touring Japan!
