Railway Expansion from Lübbenau to Cottbus Finally Underway
The long-awaited expansion of the train line from Lübbenau to Cottbus is finally underway. Deutsche Bahn AG has awarded contracts for the double-track project, which is set to bring significant improvements to the region's transport network.
Nicole Walter-Mundt, the CDU's transport expert, has welcomed the news, but stressed the importance of a reliable replacement service during the line's closure. The project, which is expected to take a year, will see the line closed for construction. A sensible diversion concept is demanded to avoid slow and unattractive replacement traffic by bus.
The project is extensive, involving the construction of a second track, overhead lines, and the adjustment of twelve level crossings and six railway bridges. Additionally, eighteen underpasses will be built on a 29-kilometer stretch. The stations Raddusch, Kunersdorf, and Kolkwitz will also receive a second platform.
Brandenburg's Minister of Transport Detlef Tabbert has welcomed the second track, stating it will provide a stable half-hourly service and direct connections to Berlin and BER airport. Trains are expected to run between Cottbus and Berlin at half-hour intervals from 2027. Clemens Rostock, state chairman of the Brandenburg Greens, has called for a bypass of the closed line via Calau to be prepared.
The passenger association 'Pro Bahn' has also welcomed the plans, stating it addresses the region's war damage from 80 years ago. The Minister promises to closely monitor the implementation and ensure all promises are kept.
The expansion of the train line from Lübbenau to Cottbus is a significant step forward for the region's transport infrastructure. While the closure of the line for a year is a downside, the long-term benefits, including improved services and direct connections to Berlin and BER airport, are expected to be substantial. The project is set to begin soon, with Deutsche Bahn AG awarded the contracts for the work.
