Rail firms witness rise in verbal abuses - Railway authorities report an upward trend in verbal abuses
In recent times, railway companies in Saxony-Anhalt, Germany, have been grappling with an increase in verbal attacks, abuse, and aggressive behavior towards their staff. These incidents, which often lead to disrespectful behavior, threats, and attacks, are placing a significant burden on staff and compromising passenger safety.
The problem is not unique to Saxony-Anhalt. Railways across the country have reported similar issues, with private railway company Abellio noting a significant increase in verbal attacks in the first half of 2025. The Mitteldeutsche Regiobahn (MRB) has also noted a significant increase in the potential for aggression towards train staff.
The cause of this rise in verbal aggression is complex and multifaceted. Historical, social, and political tensions between East and West Germany, as well as societal issues such as security concerns, political polarization, or responses to service policies, may contribute to this phenomenon.
The German Railway Company (Deutsche Bahn) has been implementing measures to address this growing issue. Since 2024, the company has been using bodycams to protect train staff. Around 100 bodycams are currently in use at DB Regio Southeast, with the German Railway Company reporting a de-escalating effect from their use.
The bodycams not only provide a deterrent but also offer court-admissible video material, which can aid in holding perpetrators accountable. In addition, the German Railway Company has an emergency call system that allows employees to discreetly request help during such incidents.
Incidents often occur during ticket checks, when passengers without valid tickets are asked to pay a fine, or under the influence of alcohol. The number of reported physical attacks has decreased from 19 to 10 compared to the previous year, but insults and aggressive behavior have noticeably increased.
The threshold for such behavior has significantly decreased in recent years, according to Abellio. In 2023, there were over 1,300 attacks on train attendants in local transport alone.
Railway companies in Saxony-Anhalt are using a combination of preventive measures and technical equipment to improve safety. These measures include public awareness campaigns, improved training in conflict resolution for railway employees, and strengthened security patrols. While these measures are currently being implemented in Saxony-Anhalt, it is hoped that they will help to reduce the incidence of verbal attacks across the country.
The German Press Agency is reporting on this issue, highlighting the need for a comprehensive approach to address this growing concern and ensure the safety and wellbeing of railway staff and passengers alike. Further investigation through specialized transport, security, or regional government sources would be needed for a detailed and up-to-date analysis of this issue.
1.In light of the escalating incidents of verbal aggression towards train staff across Germany, it is essential for community policy to address this issue in vocational training programs for railway employees, equipping them with the necessary skills to handle such situations effectively.
2.As the finance department of a railway company, we should consider allocating additional funds towards the improvement of transportation safety, considering the increased costs associated with addressing crimes and injustices against train staff.
3.General-news outlets, such as the German Press Agency, must continue to shed light on this critical issue, pushing for a broader discussion not only on the crime-and-justice aspect but also on the potential social, political, and historical factors contributing to this problem in order to effectively implement a community policy solution.
