Railroad corporation CFR plans to set up acoustic-dampening barriers in Bucharest and its surroundings
The Romanian National Railway Company (CFR) has announced plans to install sound-absorbing panels around Bucharest, with specific locations including the Constanta Bridge, the Bucharest Nord-Constanta railway line, and the Chitila area.
According to the press release, the installation of these panels is intended to reduce noise pollution in neighboring localities. The project, funded by the Romanian state budget, is allocated nearly RON 11 million (EUR 2.1 million).
In the Chitila area, panels will be installed on Line 300 Bucharest Nord-Predeal, between kilometer 10+550 and kilometer 11+050, over a distance of approximately 500 meters. On the Bucharest Nord-Constanta railway line, panels will be installed over a distance of 300 meters, between kilometer 4+300 and kilometer 4+600.
The heights of the sound-absorbing panels will range between two and four meters. Specially designed sound-absorbing panels will be installed to reduce the acoustic impact. The technical solutions are expected to result in an estimated noise reduction of approximately 10 dB(A) at the receiver level.
The installation of the panels is estimated to take approximately 5 months, with the completion deadline set for the beginning of next year. Execution works will begin after the completion of administrative steps and the issuance of the start order.
While a detailed timeline for the installation of these panels is not yet available, it is recommended to consult official announcements from CFR, the Ministry of Transport, local municipal or regional environmental agencies involved in noise control, or Romanian infrastructure development plans for the most accurate and updated information.
The main purpose of this investment is to reduce the noise level generated by train traffic in residential areas, contributing to a quieter and more livable environment for local communities.
In alignment with the project, the Romanian National Railway Company (CFR) will also consider installing sound-absorbing panels in areas of environmental science concern, such as the Constanta Bridge and suitable locations along the environmental-science route. This initiative, aimed at minimizing noise pollution and enhancing the overall environment, could potentially attract investor interest from the finance sector. With efficient transportation systems, like the Romanian Railways, embracing sustainability measures, there's an opportunity for industry players to align their operations with environmental, social, and governance (ESG) standards, ensuring long-term profitability.
