Railroad operator under fire for train disruptions - LNVG voices criticism - Rail operators face criticism from LNVG for delaying and disrupting train services

In recent times, regional rail lines operated by Start Niedersachsen Mitte in Lower Saxony have been facing a series of challenges, with frequent delays, staff shortages, and maintenance issues causing disruptions for passengers.

Despite a lack of explicit, current data on these issues in available search results, it appears that the Heidekreuz and the Weser-/Lammetalbahn rail lines have been particularly affected. According to reports, some trains on these lines only exist on paper, and conditions on the line between Hildesheim and Bodenburg are described as "catastrophic".

Start Niedersachsen Mitte, the railway company responsible for operating the RB 37 (Bremen - Soltau - Uelzen), RB 38 (Hannover - Soltau - Hamburg-Harburg), RB 77 (Hildesheim - Hameln - Herford) and RB 79 (Bodenburg - Hildesheim) lines on behalf of the Lower Saxony State Transport Company (LNVG) since the end of 2021, has cited various causes for these operational disruptions. These include construction sites with speed restrictions, single-track sections without overtaking possibilities, technical vehicle failures, delays from previous train journeys, and personnel shortages.

The LNVG has demanded improvements from Start Niedersachsen Mitte, with the spokesperson stating that the company must present a reliable concept for all lines, with the start of school as the latest deadline. However, the company denies a significant increase in complaints and states that they received slightly fewer customer responses in the first half of 2025 compared to the same period of the previous year.

The ongoing conditions in the Weserbergland region pose an additional challenge for Start Niedersachsen Mitte. The company is working with personnel service providers to bridge temporary shortages due to increased sick leave among personnel.

Pro Bahn, a passenger association, has previously criticised the conditions on Start's rail lines as "unacceptable" and is now calling for emergency procurement of a new railway company due to Start's inability to provide consistently reliable rail traffic for almost four years. The association believes that the conditions on the starting lines are so catastrophic that they are calling for the LNVG to terminate the contract with Start Niedersachsen Mitte and award it to another railway company through emergency procurement.

The LNVG considers terminating the transport contract with Start a "feasible legal option", but notes the practical disadvantages that come with this, such as finding a replacement railway company with enough personnel and maintenance capacities available at short notice.

Passengers are advised to check local transport authority announcements, Start Niedersachsen Mitte official communications, or regional news outlets for the most accurate current status of the rail services. The transport contract with Start Niedersachsen Mitte runs until 2029, according to the LNVG.

  1. A reliable concept for vocational training in the railway industry could potentially address the ongoing personnel shortages faced by Start Niedersachsen Mitte, to ensure the timely resumption of services as well as maintain long-term sustainability and success.
  2. In light of financial constraints, public-transit authorities may need to explore innovative avenues for funding to invest in improved infrastructure for regional rail lines, such as the Heidekreuz and Weser-/Lammetalbahn, to alleviate the current transportation challenges and support the growth of local businesses.
  3. Embracing technology and collaboration between private and public sectors, industry leaders could build partnerships in order to develop innovative solutions for transportation problems, such as automation for maintenance and monitoring, or smart bus transfer systems for areas not covered by the regional rail lines.
