Porsche's New Surfboard Brings Back the Famed Carrera RS 2.7 and the '70s Southern California Surf Era
In a unique blend of automotive history and surf culture, Porsche and California-based Almond Surfboards have unveiled the Porsche x Almond Carrera RS 2.7 Surfboard collection. This limited-edition collaboration, launched in July 2025, pays homage to the iconic 1972 Porsche 911 Carrera RS 2.7 and Southern California's surf culture.
The collection celebrates the 1972 911 Carrera RS 2.7, one of Porsche's most legendary models, famed for its lightweight construction, exceptional performance, and distinctive style which helped define Porsche’s motorsport legacy. Karsten von Engeln, President & CEO of Porsche Design of America, hailed the RS 2.7 as "one of the most celebrated 911s of all time," praising this partnership for perfectly capturing its spirit.
At the heart of the collection is a handmade 6-foot winged swallowtail surfboard, finished in Grand Prix White, with racing stripe accents in Red, Blue, or Green, mirroring the original 911 RS 2.7’s signature colorways. The design reflects the balance, agility, and clean aesthetics of the RS 2.7, aiming to provide a similar experience on the waves as the car did on the road and racetrack. Only 72 surfboards were made, a deliberate nod to the 1972 model year, each priced at $3,000 USD.
Besides surfboards, the collection includes apparel and accessories that capture the laid-back Californian surf vibe combined with Porsche’s precision design. These items include vintage-style T-shirts, caps, pigment-dyed ocean-blue sweatshirts, boardshorts, beach towels, canvas totes, hand-stitched surf flags, a Porsche 911 Carrera RS 2.7 model car, sticker sets, and other collectible items.
The Porsche x Almond Carrera RS 2.7 Surfboard collection is available through the Porsche Online Shop, Porsche Design stores, select Porsche Centres, and Almond’s flagship store in Costa Mesa, California. This collaboration uniquely fuses automotive history with surf culture, making the Porsche x Almond Carrera RS 2.7 Surfboard collection both a functional surf accessory and a collectible homage to a legendary car.
The surfboard's underside features Porsche branding and a color-matched single fin that subtly references the iconic Fuchsfelge wheels from the RS. The surfboard's fuller outline and narrower tail are intentionally designed for performance on the water. A guidebook highlighting the best surf spots in southern California will be coming soon. Given the limited quantities and the success of last year's drop, the surfboards are expected to sell out quickly.
The RS 2.7 was a homologation special debuting in 1972, being the first to be called "Carrera" and also the first-ever RS model. For completists, there's a model car, sticker sets, and other small-batch collectibles included in the collection. The Porsche x Almond collection also includes vintage-style tees and hats with the "Single Fins & Air Cooled Engines" mantra.
The surfboard's design evokes both the RS 2.7's distinctive silhouette and classic board designs of the early '70s. The surfboard is made-to-order and production takes 6-8 weeks. The RS 2.7 became a cultural symbol, especially in places like Malibu and Santa Monica where driving and surfing went hand in hand. For those who appreciate both automotive history and surf culture, the Porsche x Almond Carrera RS 2.7 Surfboard collection offers a unique opportunity to own a piece of both worlds.
