Polish Authorities Arrest Ukrainian Suspect in Nord Stream Pipeline Attack

Polish authorities have arrested 46-year-old Ukrainian national Wolodymyr Z. in Warsaw. He is wanted in Germany for his alleged role in the 2022 attack on the Nord Stream pipelines. This arrest comes three years after the incident and follows the detention of another suspect in Italy last year.

Wolodymyr Z., a trained diver, is accused of jointly causing an explosion and treasonous sabotage. He is suspected of being part of the group that placed explosives near the island of Bornholm, leading to severe damage and the pipelines' inability to transport gas. The arrest took place in Pruszkow, near Warsaw, after he re-entered Poland.

Experts believe the attack involved divers attaching explosives to the pipelines' lines. Wolodymyr Z. initially evaded arrest in 2024 by fleeing to Ukraine. His first interrogation after the arrest was brief. He will now face extradition to Germany and appear before the investigating judge of the Federal Court of Justice. The extradition process is expected to take several weeks or months.

The arrest of Wolodymyr Z. marks a significant development in the investigation into the Nord Stream pipeline attack. His extradition to Germany will allow for further questioning and potential prosecution. This arrest follows the detention of another suspect in Italy last year, bringing the total number of arrests to two.
