'Pictures of the 'Lucietta' Electric Water Taxi'
The first fully electric water taxi in Venice, named Lucietta, has made a splash in the city's historic canals. Designed by Nauta Yachts (also known as Nauta Design) and built by Murano's Cantiere Serenella shipyard, this 30-footer vessel combines traditional Venetian boatbuilding techniques with modern sustainable materials.
Measuring 9.3 meters (30.5 feet) in length, 2.25 meters (7.4 feet) in beam, and 2.1 meters (6.8 feet) in height, Lucietta adheres to Venice’s strict canal navigation constraints. It is designed to accommodate up to 14 passengers, with seating that contrasts the beige upholstery with rich wood.
Powered by a 200 kW electric motor and a 180 kWh lithium-ion battery system, Lucietta boasts a top speed of 30 knots (55.5 km/h). The battery capacity supports an 8-hour workday at typical lagoon speeds of 7–20 km/h. This propulsion system reduces direct CO2 and particulate emissions, cuts energy consumption by 60% compared to diesel taxis, and significantly reduces noise pollution, improving Venice’s acoustic environment.
Lucietta's environmental impact is further reduced with the use of recycled Murano glass elements, developed by a local startup named Rehub. These glass elements reflect Venetian heritage while promoting sustainability, blending tradition with innovation in design and materials.
The helm of Lucietta pairs classic design with modern technology, ensuring a smooth and efficient ride under Venice's many bridges. Nauta Yachts spearheaded the design of this groundbreaking vessel, making Lucietta not just a symbol of Venice's maritime heritage, but also a testament to the city's commitment to sustainable innovation.
