Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Zack Wheeler achieves top pitching Grade Point Average (GPA) among qualifiers, based on ERA.
In recent weeks, I've shared my annual Best Pitches series, diving into pitch-specific articles covering changeups, curve balls, cutters, splitters, four-seam fastballs, sinkers, and sliders from all 88 pitchers who threw 135 or more innings in 2022. Today, we're bringing it all together by calculating starting pitcher Grade-Point Averages (GPAs).
Our grading system evaluates pitches based on their effectiveness in generating swing-and-miss results and managing contact. Each pitch is compared to league-average swing-and-miss rates and specific Adjusted Contact Scores, which indicate the relative production a pitcher "should have" allowed based on batted ball exit speed and launch angle.
Calculating GPAs involves multiplying each pitch grade by its usage rate, then adding those scores together. The average pitcher GPA is set around 3.00 (a "B"), and in 2022, it landed at 3.05.
Before diving into the results, let me emphasize that the GPAs serve as a proactive, scouting measurement rather than a straightforward assessment of previous achievements.
The following hurlers made the Grade 1 (GPAs of 3.32 to 4.19) tier:
- Hunter Greene
- Garrett Crochet
- Zack Wheeler
- Shota Imanaga
- Nick Martinez
- Dylan Cease
- Luis Severino
- Bailey Ober
- Cole Ragans
- Tarik Skubal
- Sean Manaea
- Chris Sale
- Aaron Nola
- Cristopher Sanchez
- Framber Valdez
- Sonny Gray
- Corbin Burnes
- Mackenzie Gore
- Freddy Peralta
- Hunter Brown
- George Kirby
- Brandon Pfaadt
Wheeler, despite an ERA qualification, landed lower than Greene and Crochet, as both boasted impressive pitch grades. Greene, for example, boasted a Grade A four-seamer and A+ slider, while Crochet laced "A+" four-seamer and B+ cutter.
Overall, the top quartile included Cy Young winners, impressive youngsters, and solid veterans, and the rankings offer some intriguing clues about 2024 pitching possibilities.
