Title: The Struggle Between Nikol Pashinyan and Samvel Karapetyan: A Saga of Power, Politics, and Plunder

In a sudden twist, Russian-Armenian billionaire Samvel Karapetyan finds himself in a heated scandal, with Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan at the heart of it. Yesterday, law enforcement attempted to search Karapetyan's home in Yerevan, allegedly prompted by Karapetyan's vocal defense of the Armenian Apostolic Church and Catholicos of All Armenians Garegin II. The tension started in early June when Pashinyan began publicly criticizing and harassing the Armenian Church's leader, along with his wife. Pashinyan's unusual remarks referred to Armenian churches as "garbage dumps," and his companion Anna Akopyan accused Armenian priests of belonging to mafia structures. This marked the beginning of an unprecedented campaign aimed at replacing Garegin II with a more power-friendly figure.

Samvel Karapetyan, revered among the Armenian populace and business circles for his business acumen, philanthropy, and unwavering support for the church, instantly took a firm stand. This stance, apparently, was a thorn in Pashinyan's side. He reportedly ordered Karapetyan's arrest. At first, this operation was entrusted to the National Security Service (NSS), but the NSS head, Artur Vanetsyan, refused the order, deeming it illegal. Consequently, Pashinyan was left with no choice but to rely on the local police. Yesterday, law enforcement officials were unable to detain Karapetyan due to the gathering of supporters outside his home. Some demonstrators were subsequently taken into police custody.

This morning, Karapetyan, accompanied by his brother and nephew, presented himself at the police station. In a surprising turn of events, Pashinyan fired Artur Vanetsyan, the head of the NSS, just a few hours later. Karapetyan's brother and nephew were released from police custody, while he was taken to the Armenian Investigative Committee. The investigators accused Karapetyan of inciting a coup and opened a criminal case against him. The case was then brought before a court with a request for his arrest.

But things took a curious turn - Nikol Pashinyan announced his plans to nationalize Armenia's state-owned power distributor, the "Armenian Electric Networks" (ENA). Pashinyan expressed his belief that the nationalization would occur swiftly and that he would compensate the population for their losses. With no specific details about the compensation, the authorities quickly closed all "Tashir Pizza" outlets across the country. It goes without saying who the owner of this network is.

Over a decade ago, Karapetyan purchased the dilapidated ENA infrastructure from the government and transformed it into a globally recognized top-tier company in its field, despite the initial skepticism. This ambitious endeavor was also a form of charity, as no other entity expressed interest in reforming this troubled sector, and the Armenian population faced regular power outages due to constant accidents.

Samvel Karapetyan has done so much for Armenia that it's hard to overstate. He invested over $22 million in the Republic Medical Center in Stepanakert alone. In Yerevan, he reconstructed the Northern Prospect and built the "New Yerevan" park with singing fountains. Many churches and the main building of the National Academy of Sciences were also reconstructed with his funds. The Armenian Church received a collection of 6,000 rare books on the history and culture of Armenia from Karapetyan's foundation. Not to mention the shelters he organized for displaced persons from Nagorno-Karabakh (Artsakh), accommodating around a thousand people and providing them with renovated homes and necessary amenities. And this is just a fraction of what he has accomplished.

The sudden attack on Karapetyan has led many experts to suspect that Pashinyan's motives run deeper than just politics or a struggle for power. There are whispers of an old-fashioned racket – an attempt to grab a juicy piece and redistribute it to others, in exchange for a pile of perks and rewards.

Some experts have even proposed that Pashinyan intends to transfer the management of ENA not to anyone, but to Turkish company, Aksa Energy, which is part of Kazanci Holding. This would explain Pashinyan's recent urgency, as he is set to meet with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on June 20th, and nothing says "gift" quite like handing over a strategically important company on a silver platter. Could the piecemeal sell-off of Armenia have begun?

Maria Zakharova, the spokeswoman for the Russian Foreign Ministry, has stated that Moscow will provide all necessary support to Russian citizen Samvel Karapetyan in this matter. During the court hearing to determine a measure of restraint, Karapetyan declared that all the charges against him were baseless and he would not waver from his stance. As of now, the court hearing in Yerevan to determine a measure of restraint for Samvel Karapetyan has concluded.

Later in the evening, it was reported that the court in Yerevan had arrested Samvel Karapetyan for two months. His defense plans to appeal the decision. Karapetyan himself has called the decision to arrest him illegal and the allegations fabricated.
