Paramount Secures South Park in a $1.5 Billion Agreement Following Intense Bidding Competition

In a significant move for the streaming industry, Paramount has secured a deal worth $1.5 billion with the creators of the iconic animated series, "South Park." Trey Parker and Matt Stone's Park County production company have agreed to a five-year deal, with the global streaming rights valued at an impressive $300 million annually[1][2].

This new agreement marks the first time "South Park" will stream on Paramount+, and it comes after the show's 27th season premiere was delayed due to complex contract negotiations, further complicated by the $28bn Paramount-Skydance merger[3]. The debut of the new season, titled 'Sermon on the 'Mount', was postponed by two weeks[4].

The episode takes aim at political dysfunction, NPR, and religious extremism with the show's usual mix of absurdity and vulgarity[5]. In the episode, a Trump-like character is featured in the White House[6].

The deal also grants Paramount+ streaming rights to all 26 previous seasons of "South Park" and orders 50 new episodes[7]. This new deal builds on a previous $900m deal struck in 2021 that extended the show through 2027 and funded a series of South Park movies and spin-offs for Paramount+[8].

The move comes amid media consolidation and belt-tightening, with Paramount looking to lock down flagship IP and stabilise its streaming future[9]. However, the deal marks the end of a $500m exclusive streaming arrangement with HBO Max[10].

Some media watchers have questioned whether the cancellation of CBS' '60 Minutes' programme's $16m settlement with Donald Trump over a lawsuit alleging bias might have been tied to the deal[11]. CBS, also owned by Paramount Global, has faced scrutiny for cancelling 'The Late Show with Stephen Colbert'[12]. However, Paramount has denied any political motivations regarding the cancellation of the late-night talk show[13].

Trey Parker and Matt Stone expressed frustration about the merger affecting "South Park" in a now-viral post[14]. The creators are currently renegotiating a wider agreement to continue producing "South Park" beyond the current contract[15].

With this deal, Paramount is set to strengthen its streaming portfolio, offering fans of "South Park" a new home for their favourite show and promising a continuation of the series for years to come.

This new contract between Paramount and the creators of "South Park" signals a significant shift in the streaming industry, with the popular animation series now streaming exclusively on Paramount+. The deal, worth $1.5 billion over five years, includes the global streaming rights for "South Park" and access to all 26 previous seasons, as well as orders for 50 new episodes. This move is part of Paramount's strategy to strengthen its streaming portfolio and lock down flagship intellectual property to secure its streaming future.
