In a heartwarming development, pensioner Zhamilya Iskandirova, who had been waiting for this day for decades, finally had her home connected to natural gas. The elderly woman, who raised four children alone, lived in the Alatau district and had been using coal for heating her modest home due to financial constraints.

This year, 35 low-income families in the Alatau district are being connected to gas for free as part of a charity initiative by the district's akimat. Over 70 needy families in Almaty have benefited from similar initiatives, aiming to alleviate the hardships faced by socially vulnerable groups.

The news of Zhamilya's newfound comfort is being broadcasted on the 'Almaty' TV channel, highlighting the positive impact of these initiatives. The Alatau district akimat, led by Ziarat Kambatyr, head specialist of the apparatus, resolved the issue of low gas pressure in the Ojet microdistrict, ensuring the pressure is now at the normal level.

The Alatau district akimat submitted a request to 'KazTransGas Aikol' to address the low gas pressure issue, and special equipment to regulate gas supply was installed in the residential area of Ojet microdistrict. However, only 71 of the intended 92 homes of socially vulnerable families could be connected due to missing land ownership documents.

The initiative to connect gas to homes of socially vulnerable families has been a long-standing issue for Ojet microdistrict residents. The charity project was sponsored by a major national bank, and active connections to natural gas in the Ojet microdistrict began only 5 years ago.

Despite these accomplishments, some families in Almaty remain unconnected to natural gas. Infrastructural and administrative challenges, as well as financial barriers for others, are likely reasons why. The city’s gas supply network may not yet fully cover all residential areas, particularly older or informal settlements. Coordination between city authorities and supply companies, as well as verifying eligibility criteria for aid, may slow the pace of connection.

While the charity covers the connection costs fully for vulnerable families, others must bear the expense of equipment, meters, and installation, which could be prohibitive. Talks are ongoing to extend the memorandum for the charity project, aiming to connect more families to natural gas and bring warmth and comfort to more homes in need.

Journalists Narikaeva Ayanraki and Skandarbek Toguzbaev are reporting on this story, shedding light on the ongoing efforts to ensure access to essential services for all residents of Almaty. As of now, 99% of Almaty residents have access to gas, but there are still 1800 private homes not connected to natural gas.
