Over 3 million attic fans pulled from market due to fire hazard concerns

The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has announced a recall of nearly 3 million attic fans, manufactured by Air Vent, Inc., due to a potential risk of short circuit and fire hazard while in use.

The recalled fans were sold between August 2003 and December 2013, in various stores and wholesalers, as well as online, including ABC Supply, Lowe’s, and Beacon. The fans were sold for approximately $74 to $92.

The model numbers of the recalled fans are: DOW-136-0-34-XIN, DOW-136-0-26-XIN, DOW-136-0-40-XIN, DOW-136-0-40-XIN-3/4, D-RE-PSC-127/20-4P1SP. The recalled fans have electric motors used in gable and roof-mounted attic fans.

The recall involves only the fans sold by Air Vent, Inc. and only the fan motors with the distinctive vent pattern are being recalled. Consumers will be asked to fill out an online registration and verification form with photos of the recalled attic fan motor.

So far, no injuries have been reported due to the recalled attic fan motors. However, there have been 159 reported incidents regarding the recalled attic fan motors, involving burning or a fire.

If a recalled attic fan motor has been purchased, the buyer should stop using it and contact Air Vent for a refund. A refund will be issued once there is confirmation that the attic fan motor matches the ones being recalled. The distinctive vent pattern on the motor end bells can be used to identify the recalled attic fan motors.

The recall is due to a potential risk of short circuit. The CPSC urges consumers to take immediate action to ensure their safety. For more information, consumers are advised to visit Air Vent’s website or contact the company directly.
