Over 27,000 fresh vehicles have been newly registered in the Kuban region
In the Krasnodar region, foreign cars are steadily increasing their market share, while domestic brands are facing challenges. This shift is primarily due to weak consumer demand, shrinking purchasing power, and difficulties faced by Russian automakers.
As of June 30, 2025, GAZ is the second most popular truck brand with 14,010 trucks registered, but the absolute leader among truck brands remains KAMAZ, with 28,098 registered vehicles [1]. Foreign trucks account for 47% of the region's truck fleet, while Russian trucks hold 53% [2].
The domestic new vehicle market in Russia contracted by 8% year-on-year in early 2025, with a broader 26% drop in new car sales overall [3]. Russian automakers like GAZ, KamAZ, AvtoVAZ, and Likinsky Bus Plant (LiAZ) are reducing workweeks due to decreased demand and excess inventory, signaling shrinking production and availability of domestic vehicles [3].
High interest rates, inflationary pressure, and limited consumer purchasing power reduce overall car sales, hitting domestic brands harder as buyers may opt for perceived higher quality foreign models when purchasing [2][3]. Foreign cars often retain a reputation for better reliability and resale value, which can sway buyers especially in competitive regional markets like Krasnodar [4].
In the passenger car segment, LADA remains the undisputed leader with nearly 569,000 cars in the region, but its growth rate is minimal [5]. Hyundai and KIA are neck and neck, with around 132,000 cars each [5]. Over 26,000 more cars have been added to the roads of the Krasnodar region in just six months [6].
However, a concerning trend is the age of cars in the region. More than 74% of passenger cars were manufactured before 2016 [7], indicating an extremely low level of renewal. Only 134 new vehicles were registered in the first half of 2025, indicating a virtually standstill in the process of updating equipment in this segment [7].
The outlook for 2026-2027 is cautiously optimistic, given stable macroeconomic indicators, increased local production, and partnerships with foreign manufacturers, including Chinese ones [8]. The main growth in the passenger car fleet today is driven by the import of used cars, predominantly from China [9]. Many consumers view Chinese cars as an optimal combination of design, price, and technology, and this trend is strengthening on the secondary market [9].
