Over 1.2 million Ram 1500 pickup trucks are being recalled by Stellantis due to an issue with the ABS system.

Stellantis North America has announced a massive recall of 1.22 million Ram 1500 pickup trucks, marking the automaker's largest recall this year. This decision was made on August 31, 2024, following the discovery of a software malfunction on certain Ram 1500 trucks.

The recalled vehicles were produced between October 31, 2017, and February 14, 2024. The models included in the recall are the 2019 Ram 1500 trucks and 2021-2024 model year vehicles.

The software malfunction, if not addressed, can increase the risk of a crash. It is related to the Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) and, specifically, the electronic stability control system. The ABS module for the affected Ram 1500 trucks is manufactured by Mopar, the official parts supplier for Ram vehicles, with the genuine part number 68228991AD.

The problem was first reported to Stellantis on February 15, 2024. The TRSC team met with its US engineering and manufacturing team from April through June 2024 to investigate the issue. The malfunction was found to be a build issue on certain Ram 1500 pickups, discovered on June 18, 2024.

Dealers will update the vehicle's ABS module software and replace suspect ABS control modules, if necessary. The ABS module was manufactured by OEM supplier Continental. This issue cannot be fixed via an over-the-air software update, requiring Ram 1500 customers to schedule a service appointment at a dealer.

Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed between October 3-10, 2024, with dealer notification letters being sent on September 12, 2024. It's important to note that the recall does not appear to be related to any reported crashes or injuries.

Stellantis' recall count is the second highest after Ford Motor Co., which has issued 46 recalls so far in 2024, according to the NHTSA. Electronic stability control systems have been mandated on all passenger vehicles sold in the U.S. since October 2011.

This recall serves as a reminder for vehicle owners to stay vigilant and maintain their vehicles regularly. For more information, Ram 1500 owners are encouraged to contact their local dealership or visit the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's (NHTSA) website.
