Offshore wind energy firm, CS Wind, has added Scanel to their team for the Nordlicht 1 project.
In a significant development for the renewable energy sector, DEME has been appointed as the Tier 1 contractor for the installation of monopiles and transition pieces at Vattenfall's Nordlicht 1 and Nordlicht 2 offshore wind farms, located 85 kilometres north of the island of Borkum in the German North Sea.
DEME's responsibilities include the installation of all 112 monopiles and transition pieces, as well as handling scour protection for the project. To aid in the efficient and environmentally responsible foundation installation, DEME has contracted IQIP, which will supply its Hydrohammer IQ6 hydraulic hammer equipped with Pulse noise mitigation technology for the monopile installation at both Nordlicht 1 and Nordlicht 2 sites.
CS Wind Offshore, on the other hand, has been contracted by Vattenfall for the manufacturing of 68 transition pieces specifically for Nordlicht 1, with another 44 units expected for Nordlicht 2. The transition pieces will play a crucial role in connecting the wind turbines to the seabed.
The Nordlicht 1 and Nordlicht 2 wind farms are expected to enter operation in 2028, with a combined installed capacity of 1.6 GW. These wind farms will feature turbine towers partially made with low-emission steel, reducing their carbon footprint by 16 per cent.
EWE SPC will deliver the monopiles for the Nordlicht 1 and Nordlicht 2 offshore wind farms, with production planned from the end of 2025 to mid-2027. Scanel Green Energy has been awarded a contract by CS Wind Offshore for the electrical outfitting of transition pieces for Vattenfall's Nordlicht 1 offshore wind farm, while Vestas has secured a firm order for the 980 MW Nordlicht 1, delivering 68 of its V236-15.0 MW turbines.
This confirms DEME as the primary Tier 1 contractor for these wind farms, with specialized suppliers supporting the installation process. The Nordlicht 1 and Nordlicht 2 offshore wind farms are significant steps towards Germany's goal of transitioning to a more sustainable energy future.
