Nissan plans to shut down its design centers in the United States and Brazil, while also reducing operations in London and Japan.
Nissan Motor Company has announced a significant restructuring of its global design network, aiming to streamline operations and prepare for the future. This move is part of the company's "Re:Nissan" plan, which focuses on creating an agile and technology-focused organization.
Despite a 19% decrease in domestic sales in Japan, Nissan reported a slight year-on-year increase in global vehicle sales for July 2025, with a total of 262,745 units sold, including both Nissan and Infiniti brands.
The reorganisation process will see Nissan Design America (NDA) in the United States and Nissan Design China (NDC) in China take on the roles of new main studios for creative work and additional design tasks. Studio Six in Los Angeles will become the "primary US design hub", focusing on creative work, exploring consumer trends, and connecting with customers in North America. Nissan Design Europe in London will remain a centre for innovative design, with a focus on markets across Africa, the Middle East, India, Europe, and Oceania (AMIEO) region.
Nissan Design China will concentrate on upstream creativity and design excellence for the Chinese market. The Creative Box Studio in Tokyo, Japan, will continue to focus on experiential brand and lifestyle design projects, aiming to build connections with new audiences worldwide.
As part of the reorganisation, Nissan's design operations in London and Japan will undergo downsizing. This includes the closure of Nissan's design studios in San Diego, US, and São Paulo, Brazil. Nissan Design America (NDA) and Nissan Design Latin America (NDLA) will wind down their activities.
The company's Global Design Center in Atsugi, Japan, will be the lead studio, overseeing design for the worldwide market and production execution. Design programmes from these studios will be transferred to other locations to ensure ongoing projects remain aligned with Nissan's strategic priorities.
The restructuring process will be completed by the end of the fiscal year 2025. However, the exact locations where design programmes will be transferred have not been specified, nor have details about potential job losses or the impact on specific design projects been provided.
This consolidation is a significant move for Nissan as it reshapes its operations into five agile hubs to deliver faster, smarter, and more connected design solutions. Alfonso Albaisa, Nissan Motor global design corporate executive, made this statement regarding the changes.
The Just Auto Excellence Awards, which celebrate innovation, leadership, and impact within the automotive industry, offer an opportunity to showcase these achievements, elevate industry profile, and position oneself among top leaders driving advancements in the field. As Nissan continues to evolve and adapt, it remains committed to pushing the boundaries of design and innovation.
