New York Post Launches California Tabloid, The California Post

The newspaper industry is undergoing a significant shift, with over 3,200 print papers closing nationwide since 2005. Amidst this turbulent atmosphere, the New York Post Media Group, a subsidiary of Rupert Murdoch's News Corp., is expanding its reach with the launch of a new daily Los Angeles-based newspaper and news site, The California Post, planned for early 2026.

The California Post aims to cater to California, particularly the Los Angeles area, where the New York Post already has a substantial readership. Los Angeles boasts the second-largest concentration of Post readers, and 90% of the Post's digital audience resides outside New York.

The California Post will replicate much of the New York Post’s style and tone, featuring journalism, entertainment and celebrity gossip, sports, local news, and opinion with an edgy voice and irreverent cover style familiar to Post readers. It will also include national coverage from the New York Post tailored to West Coast interests.

A key focus will be on deeper coverage of local issues like homelessness and connecting The Post’s known scoops and business coverage to California-centric industries such as artificial intelligence, technology, and entertainment. The newspaper will print on the same presses that currently produce the New York Post editions for California audiences.

Nick Papps, a News Corp. veteran, will serve as the editor-in-chief, aiming to bring the distinctive Post approach to California while providing more in-depth local reporting and insight. News Corp’s CEO Robert Thomson emphasized that Los Angeles and California need "a daily dose of The Post as an antidote to the jaundiced, jaded journalism that has sadly proliferated."

The California Post is known for its relentless and skewering approach to reporting, its facility with sensational or racy subject matter, and its Page Six gossip column. The new publication will cover politics, local news, business, entertainment, and sports in California.

The venture comes at an interesting time for the news business, particularly for print papers. The online world has spawned new information sources and influencers, changed news consumers' tastes and habits, and upended the advertising market on which newspapers relied. Despite this, The California Post will have a print edition seven days a week, a website, social media accounts, video, and audio pieces.

The company has not specified how many journalists The California Post will employ. The Los Angeles readership is an attractive expansion opportunity for the New York Post, given that it already has a substantial readership in the city. However, the Los Angeles Press Club's president, Danny Bakewell, states that it's an untested market in L.A. for The California Post.

The California Post has already garnered attention, with President Donald Trump being an avid reader. The publication has also broken political stories such as the Hunter Biden laptop saga. The California Post's editor-in-chief, Keith Poole, has stated that it is the next manifestation of the national brand. With its unique blend of the New York Post's style and localised, in-depth coverage, The California Post promises to bring a fresh perspective to the California news landscape.
