New Railway Station Design Proposals for Munich's "Baumschule Laim" Station Underway

Munich's Shiny New U-Bahn Extension

Germany's Bavarian jewel, Munich, just got a splash of silver with the announcement of a new U-Bahn extension. The city has unveiled the first designs for the extension of U5 line, set to include three ravishing new stations by 2031. Here's the lowdown on the upcoming Laimer Platz to Pasing expansion.

Willibaldstraße's Blooming U-Bahnhof

The initial designs for the first station on the extension, Baumschule Laim, have delighted district politicians. The eye-catching designs from architects Allmann Wappner have been met with gleeful applause. Construction is on track; the shell of the station is expected to rise in 2028, with the first U5 train rumbling through in mid-2031.

The Road to Pasing: What's Next?

The green light for the Munich city council in 2019 marked the beginning of plans for a larger U5 extension, which ultimately aims to connect the line to the development area in Freiham. The western part of Munich will soon boast a new city quarter housing 25,000 inhabitants and 15,000 jobs.

The Journey: Station by Station

  • Baumschule Laim: Planned beneath Willibaldstraße, this station will boast a 120-meter-long platform with two exits each at Gotthard-/Reutterstraße and Willibaldstraße. Accessibility will be ensured with elevators on both sides of Gotthardstraße.
  • Am Knie: This station will be nestled 13 meters below the surface and will feature another 120-meter-long platform. Exits will be situated at the intersection of Josef-Felder-Straße/Landsberger Straße/Am Knie, as well as the southern end of the platform, leading to the surface at Am Knie Street. Accessibility will be catered with multiple elevators.
  • Pasing: Passengers will disembark from U5 at a shiny new station in Pasing, from which they can seamlessly transfer to the S-Bahn. However, this won't happen before 2030, as city estimates suggest a design and construction period of a decade.

The Price Tag

The city has provisionally budgeted €1.3 billion for the ambitious project, but costs have fluctuated in the past. Keep an eye on official announcements for any updates on this hefty figure.

The extension of Munich's U5 line, including the new stations at Baumschule Laim, Am Knie, and Pasing, promises to be a significant development in the city's public-transit system, particularly with its estimated completion by 2031. This transportation project is expected to cost around €1.3 billion, with a portion of the funds potentially coming from Germany's finance industry as the city seeks to secure sufficient funding for the ambitious project.
