Alternative Arrangement for Commuting amidst STM Strike: What's Your Strategy?

The Société de transport de Montréal (STM) has announced a strike from Monday, September 22 to Sunday, October 5. Here's what you need to know about alternative transportation options during the network disruption.

During the strike days, the metro and bus services will be affected. However, restrictions will occur only on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. The metro service will follow a restricted schedule, and bus service will be available from 6:15 AM to 9:15 AM, from 3 PM to 6 PM, and from 11:15 PM to 1:15 AM. On Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays, and Sundays, the metro and bus services will follow the normal schedule.

The adapted transport service and school service will not be affected by the strike. For those working remotely full-time or under a hybrid formula, staying home on strike days, depending on their employer's flexibility, may be an option to consider.

Biking, carpooling, car-sharing, and walking are options to consider during the days of network disruption. The Metropolitan Transportation Authority has a carpooling app that is functional and accessible to the entire metropolitan region. Leo Autopartage offers a discount on each trip during the strike and a $15 credit for new members. Signing up for car-sharing apps like Communauto and Leo Autopartage requires a driver's license verification process, so it's recommended to do so in advance.

Communauto has indicated a maximum number of vehicles will be in service among the 4500 available in Montreal. Bixi bike service will enhance its offer in the Greater Montreal region from September 22 to October 5 by installing eleven stations with regular and electric bikes. This will provide increased Bixi bike availability with more bikes and docking stations deployed across the region.

Negotiations between the union and management parties, in the presence of a mediator appointed by Quebec, are currently at an impasse. An agreement in principle that could prevent the strike on Monday is unlikely. The Tribunal administratif du travail has deemed the essential services agreed upon by the parties sufficient to ensure public health and safety is not endangered.

The STM's website will remain the best tool to stay informed about schedules during the strike. It's essential to plan your commute accordingly and allow extra time for travel. The Montreal metro system is a crucial part of the city's infrastructure, and this strike will undoubtedly cause inconvenience for many commuters. However, with careful planning and the use of alternative transportation options, it's possible to navigate the city during this period.
