NATO to Establish Ammunition Center of Excellence Across Europe in Romania, According to Minister's Statement

In a bespoken visit to Dragomirești, southern Romania, Economy Minister Bogdan Ivan announced the upcoming construction of the NATO Ammunition Center of Excellence – a monumental investment for all of Europe. This strategic facility will specialize in producing NATO-compatible ammunition, including varieties for Abrams tanks and K9 howitzers, making it the sole EU production plant capable of churning out such round sizes[1][2][4].

The center's inception follows negotiations with the US government, involving a $220 million loan under exceptionally advantageous terms for Romania, coupled with a partnership with arms manufacturer General Dynamics[2]. The collaboration aims to ensure independence in military ammunition production, particularly during times of crisis, without succumbing to external suppliers[1][4].

Joined by Agerpres, the minister was quoted expressing Romania's primary interest in securing production capacities within the nation, using five major projects for 2022 as examples. These projects encompass a powder plant, 155mm and 120mm production lines, RDX and TNT in Făgăras

The collaboration with General Dynamics, an arms manufacturer, is a significant aspect of the business side of the NATO Ammunition Center of Excellence project. The minister has emphasized the importance of finance, particularly in securing production capacities within Romania, as demonstrated by the five major projects planned for 2022.
