In a moving address, the current bishop of the diocese, Edinson Farfán, addressed a sea of faithful, declaring, "His Holiness Leo XIV now takes the reins of the Church, guiding us onwards."

Before his ascent to the papacy, Robert Francis Prevost, born September 14, 1955, in Chicago, Illinois, built a life in Peru. In 2015, he acquired Peruvian citizenship, and from 2015 to 2023, he held the position of bishop in Chiclayo. In his very first address as Pope, the 69-year-old blessed his "beloved diocese of Chiclayo" in Spanish.
