Since its inception in July 2024, residents of Wiesbaden, Hessen have been keen to share their bureaucratic woes, sending a grand total of 700 complaints to the portal.

Manafed Pentz, the De-bureaucratization Minister (CDU), revealed this intriguing figure in response to an inquiry from the FDP state parliamentary group. Curious about processes and regulations that they believe need simplifying, citizens can engage with the online portal to make a difference.

But it's not just state-level issues that have been causing trouble. People have reported their encounters with local authorities and directives from the EU and the federal government as well. Out of the numerous complaints, 122 are under the microscope in the specialized departments of the Hessian ministries, with the remaining complaints being addressed promptly by the De-bureaucratization Task Force of the ministry.

Among the slew of suggestions, several have already been implemented, are in the legislative process, or have been discussed in the Bundesrat. The minister highlighted the abolition of the permit requirement for the infiltration of rainwater and the streamlining of the grazing animal protection directive as successful examples.

Moreover, inputs from the Bureaucracy Hotline have found their way into the current revision of the Hessian Building Code, with the aim of making life easier for the citizens of Hessen. The state government is continuously on the lookout for further proposals to include in new legislative initiatives or Bundesrat initiatives, striving for a bureaucracy-free future.

Let's not forget the digital side of things! The Hessian government is working tirelessly to digitize local administrations, promoting platforms like the onlinedienst eWA (Electronic Registration), which has been successfully integrated by over 150 municipalities. Plus, there's the Hessen-Finder - a central authority finder that helps citizens identify the appropriate authorities for their inquiries, providing a unified and accessible platform for information on administrative services across the state.

By no means does this bureaucratic battle-cry qualify as a walk in the park. Nonetheless, the wheels of progress are turning, and the hope for a simpler life for Hessian residents remains steadfast.
