MTN South Africa Taps New CEO and Chairperson as Corporation Revamps its Leadership Structure
MTN Group Announces Strategic Realignment for Accelerated Growth in Africa
MTN Group, a leading telecommunications company, is set to undergo a strategic realignment in November 2025, focusing on advancing its Ambition 2025 strategy. This strategy, initially launched in 2019, focuses on three core pillars: connectivity, fintech, and digital infrastructure, with the aim of driving Africa's digital economy transformation.
Key leadership changes are part of this realignment. Ferdi Moolman, previously Group Chief Risk Officer, will take over as CEO and Executive Director of MTN South Africa (MTN SA), replacing Charles Molapisi. Molapisi, in turn, will transition to the Group Chief Technology and Information Officer role, with a new focus on accelerating AI adoption across the business.
Moolman's mandate in South Africa is to accelerate growth and strengthen returns. He brings valuable experience to the role, having served as CEO of MTN Nigeria. His appointment is part of a broader leadership consolidation, with Ebenezer Twum Asante expanding his role to drive growth across Ghana, Southern, and East Africa markets.
The strategic realignment aims to go beyond Ambition 2025 by emphasizing fintech expansion, digital services and network-as-a-service, AI infrastructure and data center development, and capital investment discipline. For instance, MTN SA will invest $500 million in fiber to support network resilience and growth.
The realignment also reflects a value-driven approach to shareholder returns, navigating regulatory risks and competitive pressures in key markets like Nigeria and South Africa. Sindisiwe (Sindi) Mabaso-Koyana will become Chairperson of MTN SA in the first quarter of 2026, joining Molapisi to jointly drive MTN SA's renewed focus on performance and market leadership.
In summary, MTN Group’s November 2025 strategic realignment combines leadership restructuring with focused investments and innovation efforts to accelerate Africa’s digital transformation beyond the original Ambition 2025 blueprint. The changes aim to support the accelerated execution of the strategy beyond 2025 and greater value creation for stakeholders over the medium term, as stated by Ralph Mupita, Group President and CEO, MTN.
