Millions Left in Dark: Iberian Blackout Strikes Spain and Portugal
A severe power outage, the worst in over two decades, struck Spain and Portugal on April 28, 2021. The incident, known as the 'Iberian blackout', left millions without power and caused significant disruptions in essential services.
The sequence of failures began at 12:32 (Brussels time) when several solar and wind farms in southern Spain suddenly disconnected from the grid. This triggered a chain reaction, with additional losses occurring in regions such as Granada, Badajoz, Seville, and Cáceres. The Iberian blackout was classified as 'level 3', the most serious level provided for by European legislation. The incident is described as 'the most significant to have occurred in the European electricity system in over 20 years'. The cause of the blackout was identified as a succession of sudden shutdowns of renewable production.
The 'Iberian power outage' of April 28, 2021, affected millions of citizens and caused serious disruptions in essential services. A report on the incident is being drafted, but the number of countries involved in its preparation remains unspecified.
