Micro Bird Opens New Plattsburgh Plant, Boosting U.S. Production

Microsoft, a joint venture between Blue Bird and Girardin, has officially opened its new manufacturing plant in Plattsburgh, New York. The 156,000-square-foot facility, formerly a Nova Bus plant, was acquired in 2022 and has begun producing Microsoft Birds in the U.S. for the first time in 15 years.

The plant currently employs 225 workers and aims to grow to 350 as it reaches full production capacity. This expansion is supported by the Empire State Development, which has provided nearly $10 million in performance-based Excelsior Jobs Program tax credits and a $2.5 million capital grant.

The new plant is fully compliant with the Buy America Act, ensuring it meets U.S. manufacturing standards. Eric Boulé, President and CEO of Microsoft, has led the company since at least 2025, overseeing this significant expansion. The Plattsburgh facility is expected to double the company's Type A production, increasing daily output to 15 buses from the current five.

The opening of the Plattsburgh plant returns a significant portion of Microsoft production to the U.S., marking a substantial increase in the company's American footprint. New York Gov. Kathy Hochul attended the ribbon-cutting ceremony, expressing pride in welcoming Microsoft to the North Country.
