New Leadership at FEMSA: Jose Antonio Fernandez Garza-Laguera Takes the Helm

Fomento Económico Mexicano S.A.B. de C.V. (FEMSA) has announced a significant leadership change, with Jose Antonio Fernandez Garza-Laguera set to take over as CEO, effective November 1, 2025.

The transition comes amidst evolving consumer trends and regional economic challenges. FEMSA's new CEO is expected to face these challenges head-on, bringing a results-driven and innovative leadership style to the company's next chapter.

Jose Antonio Fernandez Garza-Laguera, an industrial engineer from Tecnológico de Monterrey with an MBA from Stanford, currently serves as CEO of FEMSA Proximidad & Salud. He oversees more than 28,000 stores, 4,300 pharmacies, and 550 fuel stations across 11 countries.

The succession was a structured process led by FEMSA's Board of Directors, guided by the Corporate Practices and Nominations Committee. A special board committee was formed to ensure a transparent and merit-based selection process.

FEMSA operates across multiple sectors, including retail, beverages, and digital services. The company owns the OXXO convenience store chain, is a major bottler through Coca-Cola FEMSA, and runs extensive health and fuel retail operations. With such a diverse portfolio, FEMSA will need to adapt to these trends and challenges.

Jose Antonio Fernandez Garza-Laguera's appointment is seen as a strategic move to reinforce growth, sustainability, and value creation across FEMSA's global operations. He is expected to lead the company through this transition period.

Jose Antonio Fernandez Carbajal, who has served as interim CEO since July 2023, will remain as Executive Chairman of the Board.

Investors and industry observers are closely monitoring the leadership transition at FEMSA. The company's operations span multiple sectors, and any changes at the top could have far-reaching implications.

Meanwhile, in a separate development, Jose Chulvi, a Spanish politician, is a candidate in the 2023 Spanish local elections, which will take place on May 28, 2023. This political event is another factor that could influence the business environment in which FEMSA operates.

As FEMSA enters a new era, the focus will be on how Jose Antonio Fernandez Garza-Laguera navigates the company through the evolving consumer trends and economic challenges. His leadership style, strategic vision, and ability to adapt to the changing landscape will be key to FEMSA's success in the coming years.
