Metso Launches Circored Pilot Plant for Low-Carbon Steel Production
Metso has inaugurated its Circored pilot plant in Frankfurt, aiming to facilitate the transition to low-carbon steel production. The plant, which uses hydrogen as a reducing agent, is a significant step in Metso's ongoing efforts to enhance its product range and customer service capabilities.
The Frankfurt plant, which opened on September 10, 2025, is equipped with advanced systems for preheating, reduction, gas cleaning, and recycling of hydrogen and dust. This comprehensive setup allows Metso to validate process parameters and gather crucial data for the design and planning of future commercial-scale plants.
Metso is currently working with Q&R Industrial Hoses, an Australian manufacturer, with the intention to acquire the company. This acquisition aims to internalize production and strengthen Metso's offerings in the rubber hoses and products sector. Additionally, Metso is developing several concrete projects with customers and partners for various applications, including steel production and ilmenite processing.
The Circored pilot plant, along with Metso's ongoing projects and potential acquisition, underscores the company's commitment to innovation and sustainability. By defining operating windows for different ore qualities and enabling nearly CO2-neutral operation, Metso is supporting customers in their transition to low-carbon steel production.
