"Metamorphosis of Hamburg's City Hall Pavilions on Business Cards"
Revamped Town Hall Market: A New Lease on Life for Hamburg's Iconic Landmark
The renovation works at the Town Hall Market, a central hub in Hamburg, are nearing completion. The goal? To breathe new life into this vibrant location.
Andreas Dressel, the SPD's Hamburg Senator of Finance, can't help but get excited about the reopening of the Pavilions at the Town Hall Market. "The Currywurst here has always been excellent. It's terrific that I can continue to savor it here," he said casually in the heart of Hamburg recently.
Over the years, the stalls under the distinctive green steel-glass construction have shown signs of wear and tear. Uninviting ambience was a common complaint. To tackle this, Sprinkenhof GmbH crafted a comprehensive revitalization plan, which is now underway.
From Ruin to Renewal: The Town Hall Market Pavilions' Makeover
Approximately five million euros have been invested in the refurbishment since 2019. This includes the renovation of the canopy and the pavilions themselves, which cost 1.85 million euros. In the listed, 40-year-old roof construction, 3660 glass panes were replaced, with each pane being a unique piece.
The Town Hall Market arcades' unique architecture is a sight to behold. Originally one of Hamburg's most frequented spots, it underwent a redesign less than half a century ago, resulting in the creation of these pavilion structures – exceptional postmodern edifices that have now been modernized. The SPD's Senator of Culture Carsten Brosda raves about the outcome: "Now one of Hamburg's most important monuments is looking splendid for the next few decades."
German Chic Heating and Modern Amenities
To ensure a comfortable, energy-efficient future, a heat pump system has been installed for heating the pavilions. The four pavilions, offering approximately 105 square meters of rental space, have been gutted, repainted, and fitted with new building and fire protection systems. The former public WC facility in the basement area has been reduced in size for additional storage space, now accessible exclusively to guests of the pavilion operators.
Five Culinary Maestros Transforming the Pavilions at the Town Hall Market
Four new caterers and the existing Currywurst stand of Ludwig-Sebastian Bielfeldt are making deck-worthy preparations to turn the eyesore into a haven for Hamburgers and tourists. The first pavilions are set to open at the end of June, with the last operator moving in in October.
"There was some chaos in certain areas. We deliberately opted for a renovation and re-tendering process that would bring more of Hamburg's essence to the table. Mission accomplished, even in the culinary offerings," Dressel concluded.
Outdoor Oasis: Furnishing the 240 Square Meter Terrace
A complete furniture overhaul is planned for the approximately 240 square meter large outdoor area. The Danish company Hay will supply around 200 chairs, benches, and tables, which will remain outside even during non-operating hours. The furniture contract was awarded to the Hamburg company Punct Objekt.

While the stylish furniture is a delight to behold, there are concerns about potential vandalism. "We have a robust operational strategy with the tenants. As the city and Sprinkenhof, we feel responsible for preventing such incidents. I am optimistic that this arrangement will last for the next fifty years," assured Dressel.
Rest assured, the supply of currywurst for Hamburg's finance senator and the numerous visitors at the town hall square remains secure for the foreseeable future.
