Born and raised in Ishikawa Prefecture, where traditional crafts such as Kaga Yuzen dyeing, Wajima lacquerware, and Kutani porcelain still thrive, Maeda's fascination with precise craftsmanship and making things by hand was ignited at a young age, as his father was a master carpenter. This passion led him to the local technical high school, where he became immersed in the world of robot sumo.
Upon graduating from high school in 1999, Maeda joined Toyota Motor Corporation. His monozukuri aspirations were further realised within the company, and his attention was concentrated on adjusting with his left hand and monitoring changes in the section that he is shaping.
Maeda's exceptional skills have significantly reduced the need for costly and time-consuming new stamping dies. By correcting minor deformations in stamped body parts by hand-working the sheet metal, he provides data to improve the plant's stamping dies, resulting in fewer rounds of die revision. This means less electricity used in machining the dies and less waste generated, helping to reduce the plant's environmental impact.
Maeda's mastery is evident in both visual results and the consistent sound of his hammering, outperforming trainees and enabling near-perfect shapes with remarkable efficiency. He holds the highest national qualifications in both bending and hammering techniques, which are essential to produce complex three-dimensional forms required in car bodies.
Maeda's skills have earned him numerous accolades, including passing the Special Grade, the highest level, in both bending and hammering skill categories. He also possesses skills worthy of a gold medal in the WorldSkills sheet metal category. His success in the sheet metal task during new employee training led to his recommendation for the WorldSkills competition.
Over three years on the WorldSkills squad provided Maeda a unique environment for skills training. His dedication and precision paid off, as he won bronze in the WorldSkills sheet metal category in his first year and silver in his second.
Today, Maeda is the Team Leader of the Stamping Equipment Certification Section in the Body Manufacturing Engineering Division at Toyota Motor Corporation. His expertise enables rapid and accurate fabrication of complex body panels, particularly when design changes occur during development, significantly reducing the need for costly and time-consuming new stamping dies. This ability shortens development times and enhances vehicle quality.
