Maryland, Constellation Energy Strike $340M Conowingo Dam Deal for Chesapeake Bay Restoration

Maryland has reached a significant agreement with Constellation Energy, valued at $340 million, for the re-licensing of the Conowingo Dam. This deal, tied to the dam's federal license, aims to offset environmental impacts and contribute to the restoration of the Chesapeake Bay.

The agreement includes several key components. Firstly, it allocates $87.6 million for pollution reduction and resiliency projects, targeting the Susquehanna River, the Chesapeake Bay's largest tributary. Additionally, $28.2 million is earmarked for improving fish and eel passage, and $77.8 million is dedicated to trash and debris removal.

A notable aspect is the $23.3 million set aside for the construction and operation of a freshwater mussel hatchery. This will support the restoration of these vital ecosystem components. Furthermore, the deal includes a revised Water Quality Certification to be filed with federal regulators under the Clean Water Act, ensuring stricter environmental standards are met.

The agreement allows Constellation Energy to continue generating hydroelectric power at the Conowingo Dam while investing in critical water-quality and habitat projects. This collaborative effort between Maryland and Constellation Energy is a significant step towards restoring and protecting the Chesapeake Bay.
