In Cuxhaven, Germany, a ship collision between the tanker ship "Capella" and the offshore supply ship "Coastal Legend" resulted in an estimated 6,000 liters (approximately six cubic meters) of marine diesel oil leaking into the water. Fortunately, there were no injuries reported among the crew members, and shipping traffic on the Elbe River was not disrupted by the incident.

The offshore supply vessel 'Coastal Legend' sustained damage to its tank, causing the leak, and emergency efforts focused on containing and cleaning the spill. The Federal Agency for Technical Relief (THW) and the Cuxhaven Fire Department deployed oil booms to contain the spilled oil and prevent further spreading in the harbor waters.

Skimmers and specialized oil recovery vessels like 'Knechtsand' were also used to collect oil from the water surface efficiently. The Central Command for Maritime Emergencies (CEM) coordinated and commanded the emergency response, conducting aerial reconnaissance using the Do 228 aircraft to monitor the spill extent and progress.

Pumping the oil-water mixture into collection tanks and transferring it onto a bunker ship for safe handling and disposal was another crucial step in the cleanup operation. Divers worked onsite to physically seal the leak at the damaged vessel’s stern, addressing the source of the spill directly.

Multiple emergency agencies, including water police, fire departments, and technical relief personnel, continued monitoring and cleanup operations. So far, approximately 80 cubic meters of oil-water mixture have been removed from the surface.

The incident highlights the critical importance of continuous efforts to improve maritime safety, including stricter navigation controls, improved collision avoidance systems, and stronger emergency preparedness for oil spill incidents to reduce the likelihood and consequences of future collisions.

The crew of the tanker ship "Capella" remained unharmed during the accident, and the traffic on the Elbe was not affected by the operation.
