Major Companies Urge EU to Double Truck Emission Reduction Targets by 2030
A group of multinational companies, including Pepsico, Nestlé, and Nike, have urged the European Parliament to adopt more ambitious emission reduction targets for trucks. They aim for a 65% reduction by 2030, double the current EU target of 45%.
The companies argue that more stringent targets will accelerate the development of affordable heavy-duty zero-emission trucks. Currently, electric vehicle prices remain unaffordable for many. They also request a final goal of 100% reduction in CO2 emissions for trucks by 2050.
The environmental transition in the transport and logistics industry has been challenging and slow. The companies, supported by industry associations like the German Spedition and Logistics Association (DSLV) and the Logistics Association of Switzerland (LVS), sent a letter to the European Parliament. They demand a clear CO2 reduction target for heavy-duty trucks by 2030, emphasizing large CO2 reduction steps but also calling for economically realistic conditions.
The companies aim to have 150,000 emission-free trucks on the roads by 2030. They believe that more ambitious targets will drive innovation and affordability in electric truck technology. The focus of emission reduction should also extend to areas like construction, waste management, and urban distribution.
