Mainz-Mombach Terminal faces potential total shutdown
The Autobahn GmbH has announced that it will be closely monitoring traffic behavior at the Mainz-Mombach motorway interchange following an adjustment to traffic management, due to a high number of road users ignoring the imposed weight restriction.
Since April 14, 2025, vehicles with a permissible total weight of more than 3.5 tonnes have been prohibited from using certain ramps on the interchange. However, observations and regular police checks have shown that many road users are disregarding this restriction.
In response, the Autobahn GmbH has announced that it will close the corresponding ramp structures for all traffic if necessary, with the threat of a full closure looming for the first week of October if driver behavior does not change.
The company has not provided specific details about the exact measures that will be implemented to make it more difficult for trucks over 3.5 tonnes to use the ramp of the Mainz-Mombach motorway interchange. The adjustment to traffic management is set to take place from September 18th.
For traffic affected by the ban, designated detours are available. Drivers coming from Wiesbaden can use the Mainz-Gonsenheim interchange as a detour, about two kilometers away. Those wanting to get onto the A643 towards Bingen/Koblenz from the Mombacher roundabout will have to take a detour of around six kilometers via the on-ramp towards Wiesbaden, Schiersteiner Bridge, and Schiersteiner interchange.
The western on- and off-ramps are affected, including the exit from Wiesbaden towards Mainz and the on-ramp from Mainz towards Bingen.
The Autobahn GmbH urges road users to comply with the measures to avoid a full closure and to ensure the safety and efficiency of traffic at the interchange. The measure is intended to relieve three partial structures of the interchange.
The closure is intended to prevent continued disregard of the weight restriction and is being announced due to too many vehicle drivers ignoring the existing weight restriction. The Autobahn GmbH will observe traffic behavior after the adjustment until the end of September.
