In the bustling Indian automotive market, July 2025 saw a significant shift in the SUV landscape. Mahindra emerged as the leader in wholesale (dispatch) SUV sales, dispatching 49,871 units, marking a 20% year-on-year increase. However, Hyundai took the crown in retail (registration) sales, with 42,661 SUV registrations, according to data from the Vahan platform.

Mahindra's dominance in wholesale dispatches was evident, with Hyundai following closely behind with 43,973 units and Tata Motors recording 40,175 units. Hyundai, on the other hand, demonstrated its strength in retail sales and overall production volume, with a significant edge in the latter.

Tata Motors made a notable impact with its EV sales, posting a record 7,124 units for the month, leading the EV segment among mass-market brands. Mahindra sold 2,810 electric vehicles, while Hyundai's EV sales were comparatively low at 610 units.

Hyundai's strong performance was aided by a consistent demand and the export of 16,100 units globally, bringing its total dispatches to 60,073 units. SUVs comprised 71.8% of its domestic sales, the highest SUV share reported by Hyundai in India.

The competitive positioning in the Indian automotive market is tight. Hyundai reclaimed second place in retail sales from Mahindra, aided by easing supply constraints and demand recovery, while Mahindra's retail sales dipped slightly, partly due to a price hike.
