Madrid's Goalkeeper Courtois Criticizes Atletico Madrid, Simeone for 'Whining'

In the wake of Real Madrid's triumphant win against Atletico Madrid in the Champions League last 16, goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois didn't mince words, taking a jab at his former club and its manager, Diego Simeone.

After a penalty shootout victory that secured a Quarterfinals clash with Arsenal, Courtois criticized Atletico for their alleged victim mentality and excessive complaining.

In the aftermath of the controversial penalty call against Julian Alvarez, which ultimately decided the game, Courtois expressed his frustration. "UEFA saw it clearly," he stated. "I'm fed up with this constant victimhood and crying about things like this."

The Belgian goalkeeper also implied that Atletico was to blame for not capitalizing on their initial lead, stating that their strategic errors might have played a significant role in the outcome of the game.

Simeone, on the other hand, didn't hold back his feelings during a post-match press conference, publicly challenging journalists to show who had seen Alvarez double touch the ball. Courtois, in his response, labeled Simeone's behavior as unreasonable.

This outburst from Courtois is sure to further strain the relationship between the goalkeeper and Atleti fans, who have already taken drastic measures to show their disapproval. A commemorative plaque dedicated to Courtois outside the Metropolitano Stadium has been defaced and removed, and objects such as lighters were thrown at him during a La Liga derby at the same ground earlier this season.
