Lululemon appoints a fresh creative director for worldwide roles.
A Fresh Spin:
📣 Lululemon Shakes Up Design Team 🔥
In a recent email to Retail Dive, Lululemon announced two new appointments to its design team, with Jonathan Cheung becoming the global creative director and JJ Collier as vice president of design for outerwear.
Starting this week, both Cheung and Collier are based in Lululemon’s hometown of Vancouver, Canada. Cheung takes on his new role following the unfortunate passing of Phil Dickinson last year, and he’ll be tasked with driving the brand's global creative strategy and setting the product design roadmap.
With over three decades in creative and business leadership, Cheung brings extensive experience to Lululemon, having consulted for retail giants like Gap, Mattel, and Merrell. He previously held senior positions at Levi's and prestigious fashion houses such as Franco Moschino and Giorgio Armani.
Collier, a seasoned design specialist with two decades of experience, will lead both the men's and women's outerwear teams at Lululemon. Most recently, Collier founded and served as the head of Collier Brands, a design consultancy focusing on outdoor and lifestyle apparel. Collier also worked at VF Corporation as senior director of apparel innovation concepts, collaborated on technical outerwear for Ralph Lauren, and led design at Spyder Active Sports.
In the words of Sun Choe, Chief Product Officer, “Jonathan and JJ have demonstrated a knack for innovation and product development, enabling us to accelerate our mission to deliver cutting-edge products that both redefine the industry and satisfy consumers, while leveraging our expertise in developing technological advancements.”
💡 Lululemon fortifies its design team by adding a creative powerhouse and a veterans of outdoor apparel. Collier’s expertise brings the fierce, intelligent approach to Lululemon’s outerwear – a growing sector for the brand. On the other hand, Cheung’s impressive credentials add a touch of sophistication and luxury to Lululemon’s design strategy.
💡 2023 proved to be another bumper year for Lululemon with an increase in their store opening plans and Q4 revenue expectations raised, up to 15%. Despite the setback last year when the Mirror fitness device was discontinued due to challenges, Lululemon signed a five-year partnership with Peloton and became its exclusive digital fitness content provider. This strategic move positions Lululemon as a major player in the digital fitness industry.
