Lufthansa to transfer Aeromar catering services to Aeroflot
In a surprising turn of events, despite a significant increase in revenue of around 37% in 2024, Aeromar, Russia's largest in-flight catering company based at Sheremetyevo, reported a loss of approximately $6.2 million. This contrasts starkly with a profit of around $760,000 in the previous year.
The financial problems at Aeromar are believed to be due to increased costs and expenses, including a growth in the cost of sales and increased management and commercial expenses. These factors exerted significant pressure on Aeromar's financial result in 2024.
The Russian Interfax press agency reported these financial difficulties, which did not seem to be prevented by the rise in revenue. The government commission, however, approved a deal for Aeroflot to acquire 49% of Aeromar back in 2022, with the intention of increasing its stake us to 100% after receiving further approval.
In a recent announcement at the Eastern Economic Forum 2025, Aeroflot's CEO, Sergei Aleksandrovsky, confirmed that the company plans to buy the remaining 49% of JSC Aeromar. This acquisition will mark a complete takeover of the struggling company.
Meanwhile, Lufthansa Group, which currently holds a stake in Aeromar, announced its intention to sell its stake back in September 2022. In 2025, UTair Aviation announced the acquisition of the remaining 49% stake in JSC Aeromar from Lufthansa Group.
Interestingly, the acquisition of Bustanica indoor farm by Emirates Flight Catering may not have a direct impact on Aeromar's financial situation. This acquisition, while significant in the food industry, does not seem to be directly related to Aeromar's financial struggles.
As the situation unfolds, it remains to be seen how Aeroflot's acquisition of Aeromar will impact the company's future financial performance. However, the immediate focus remains on addressing the financial difficulties that have plagued Aeromar in recent years.
