Lio Tipton Discusses 'Love Hurts' and Experiencing a 'Goonies' Gathering
Nailing a role in Hollywood is an invigorating experience, something Lio Tipton can attest to after making appearances on shows like "The Big Bang Theory" and "Why Women Kill," and starring in movies such as "Lucy," "Warm Bodies," and "Crazy, Stupid, Love."
Every now and then, a leading role comes with some exceptional perks, like the one Tipton enjoyed on the new action-comedy "Love Hurts." As the film's lead, Oscar-winning actor Ke Huy Quan stars as Marvin Gable, a former assassin turned successful realtor. One of the film's co-stars is another renowned actor, Sean Astin, adding an unexpected twist to the set. This unique combination led to a surprising turn of events for Tipton.
"The first day on set, I got a chance to meet some folks before starting my scenes, and I soon realized that the scene I was about to enter featured Ke and Sean shooting," Tipton shared during our recent Zoom conversation. "It was like a miniature reunion of 'The Goonies'!"
The excitement didn't stop there, as Ke Huy Quan invited a few more friends from the classic 1985 film for the "Love Hurts" premiere.
"We had a luncheon before the premiere, and I didn't realize I was sitting next to the entire cast of 'The Goonies'!" Tipton gushed. "We chatted like old pals, and I felt like I was right back in the 80s."

In "Love Hurts," Quan stars as Marvin Gable, a reformed assassin with a secret past tied to a criminal organization known as The Company. When former lawyer for The Company, Rose (Ariana DeBose), goes missing and is accused of stealing the organization's leader's money, chaos ensues.
Tipton plays Marvin's forlorn assistant, Ashley, who shuns love until she crosses paths with The Raven (Mustafa Shakir), a hitman on a deadly mission. One of Tipton's memorable scenes involves a passionate reading of poetry between Ashley and The Raven, a challenge that required perfect timing and comic timing.
"At first, we read cheesy poetry at each other, trying to stay straight-faced while secretly cracking up," Tipton recalled. "But the scene required a balance of vulnerability and comedy, and Mustafa and I managed to find that sweet spot."

One of the film's standout moments features former Seattle Seahawks running back great Marshawn "Beast Mode" Lynch, who stars as King, one of the organization's hitmen. In an intense scene, Marvin and King engage in an epic battle, with Tipton's character Ashley attempting to intervene.
"I jump on King in the scene, and he effortlessly tosses me aside," Tipton said, laughing. "But if you ask me, he wouldn't be able to do that in real life!"
Despite their on-screen rivalry, Tipton grew fond of Lynch and loved watching him transition into acting.

"Marshawn's inner child is what makes him such a pleasure to work with," Tipton shared. "He's easygoing, has a great sense of humor, and his enthusiasm is truly inspiring."
Tipton, who is influenced by the stop-motion animation of Tim Burton and Edward Gorey, is eager to explore various genres as an actress.
"I'm looking forward to doing more action and fantasy projects," Tipton said. "But I'm not interested in doing horror movies—I'm way too scared!"
