In a move aimed at enhancing national security, the U.S. Department of State has implemented a new policy requiring all applicants for F, M, and J nonimmigrant visas to disclose their social media accounts and make them public during the application process. This policy, effective from June 18, 2025, is part of an intensified vetting process announced mid-2025.

Under this policy, applicants are required to disclose all social media accounts used in the past five years and set them to public privacy settings. Consular officers will then review the online presence of applicants, examining posts, tagged content, connections, and verifying consistency between social media profiles and visa application materials. Failure to comply with these requirements can lead to visa denials or administrative processing delays.

The primary objective of this policy is to identify potential threats to U.S. national security. Consular officers will be on the lookout for content supportive of terrorism, anti-U.S. sentiments, or previous visa violations. Critics argue that this policy represents a substantial increase in government surveillance of foreign applicants' social media activity and raises concerns about privacy violations.

Meanwhile, in Washington D.C., Congresswoman Young Kim (R-CA) attended the National Korean War Veterans Armistice Day commemoration event held at the U.S. Capitol on July 23. Rep. Kim, who is of Korean descent, is the chair of the Subcommittee on East Asia and the Pacific of the House Foreign Affairs Committee. During the event, she spoke in honour of the veterans who fought in the Korean War.

In a separate development, China announced an extension of visa-free entry to more than 70 countries as part of its efforts to draw tourists. This move is expected to boost China's tourism industry significantly.
