Lawsuit filed by cargo shipowners following collision with Baltimore bridge against construction firm responsible for vessel

The collision between the cargo ship Dali and the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore on March 26, 2021, has led to a series of legal actions. The owners of the Dali, Grace Ocean Private Limited, and its manager, Synergy Marine Private Limited, have filed a lawsuit against Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI), the shipbuilder, alleging negligence in the design of a critical switchboard on the ship.

According to the lawsuit, the defective switchboard design led to repeated electrical failures, culminating in a power loss that caused the vessel to crash into the bridge, resulting in a 1.6-mile span destruction and the tragic loss of six roadwork crew members. The lawsuit further alleges that the defect involved insecure wiring connections in the switchboard that could come loose during normal operation, causing power outages critical for vessel steering.

The Dali lost power four times within 12 hours before the collision, with the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) reporting interruptions linked to loosely connected wires on the switchboard. The power failure occurred shortly after the ship departed Baltimore, causing steering failure and the subsequent collision.

Grace Ocean Private Limited and Synergy Marine Private Limited assert that HHI’s defective manufacturing made the vessel “unreasonably dangerous” when delivered and seek compensation for repairs and liability contributions in related civil suits. The lawsuit was filed in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania in July 2025. Maryland’s Attorney General is also investigating Hyundai’s role in the incident.

The collision caused one of the largest maritime disasters in the U.S. in recent history, with the NTSB identifying the loose electrical cable in the ship’s transformer and breaker system as a critical factor underlying the power failures and accident. Increased traffic congestion remains a problem across the region due to the crash, and Baltimore's port was closed for months following the incident.

In a recent development, the owner and manager of the cargo ship have agreed to pay over $102 million to settle the lawsuit brought by the government. The settlement includes compensation for cleanup costs and other related expenses.
