In a significant development for the economic future of Latvia's eastern border region, the Alūksne region stands on the brink of joining the Latgale Special Economic Zone (SEZ). If approved, this move could bring about a host of benefits for entrepreneurs in the area, including tax incentives, access to state support mechanisms, and opportunities for investment and growth.

The intention behind granting the SEZ status to Latgale is to act as a stimulus for growth and development. This strategy has already proven successful, with the Latgale SEZ facilitating contracts worth 106.3 million euros and creating 704 new jobs since 2017. A similar dynamic is expected in the Alūksne region if it joins the Latgale SEZ.

One of the key advantages of becoming part of the SEZ is the access to corporate income and real estate tax discounts. These reductions can help reduce operational costs and increase competitiveness for businesses in the region. Furthermore, Alūksne will have access to various state support mechanisms designed to promote regional development. This includes opportunities for investments in sectors like wood processing, metalworking, textiles, and fibre-optic cable production.

The expansion of the Latgale SEZ to include the Alūksne region could potentially stimulate economic growth and development in the region. This is part of a broader strategy to strengthen economic development and security in Latvia's Eastern Border Region. The amendments, if approved, will allow the Alūksne region to become part of the Latgale SEZ, making it the first region outside of the Latgale planning region to be included in a special economic zone established by the state.

However, it is important to note that these benefits are contingent upon the approval of the necessary legislation by the Saeima (Latvia's parliament). If approved, the Alūksne region will not only promote regional development through state support mechanisms but also attract investments and create higher value-added companies, contributing to the overall economic growth of Latvia.
