Kazakhstan Grants Distinctive Status to Seven Ventures, Involving Collaboration with ADB, EBRD, and IFC
The Asian Development Bank (ADB), European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), and International Finance Corporation (IFC) have taken on seven significant projects in Kazakhstan, as announced by the Kazakhstani government on July 31, 2025. These projects, which focus on education, transportation, healthcare, and sustainable water resources, are designed to strengthen Kazakhstan's socio-economic development.
Among the ADB-led projects are the construction and operation of five student dormitories with 5,900 beds for Satbayev University in Almaty, aimed at bolstering higher education infrastructure. Additionally, the ADB is responsible for the construction and operation of the Almaty-Issyk-Kul highway, a move that will enhance regional transport connectivity.
Three 300-bed multidisciplinary university hospitals are being constructed in Karagandy, Semei, and Aktobe, with the ADB's involvement. These hospitals form part of the projects granted special significance by the Kazakhstani government.
The EBRD is co-financing a separate 300-bed multidisciplinary university hospital in Almaty, contributing to the expansion of advanced healthcare facilities in the city. It's worth noting that this hospital is distinct from the ones already mentioned in earlier projects.
The IFC's support extends to a seawater desalination plant in the Mangystau Region, a new development not previously mentioned. This plant, with a production capacity of 50,000 cubic meters per day, aims to address water scarcity and provide sustainable water supply solutions.
It's important to note that the EBRD's involvement in the hospital in Almaty is a separate partnership from the ones involving the ADB. Similarly, the IFC's involvement in the seawater desalination plant is a separate partnership.
The projects, which involve the construction and operation of various infrastructure and educational facilities, have been granted the status of special significance by the Kazakhstani government. This designation is likely to expedite implementation and underscores their strategic importance to Kazakhstan's development.
