Steam Train Journey through Mulde Valley Resumes After 22 Years
After a hiatus of more than two decades, tourist steam train trips will once again traverse the Mulde Valley, connecting Glauchau and Wolkenburg (Zwickau district). The inaugural journey commences on Ascension Day, May 29, 2025.
The honor of pulling the steam locomotive, built in 1959, goes to IG Traditionslok “58 3047” e.V., an association responsible for organizing these excursions. The locomotive will effortlessly pull four carriages accommodating approximately 800 travelers across two daytime round trips.
Invigorating the track has been necessitated by necessitating repairs and clearance efforts to rid it of undergrowth and replace aged wooden sleepers. For the initial resumption, the 14-kilometer stretch to Wolkenburg will be utilized, with aspirations for extended trips to Rochlitz in the future.
Deutsche Bahn's provisions voorbid the trains from departing directly from Glauchau station. Therefore, an emergency platform has been constructed on the track in Reinholdshain district to facilitate boarding and deboarding.
Marika Fischer, managing director of the Chemnitz Zwickau Region Tourism Association, characterizes the revival of the Mulde Valley Railway as more than a mere nostalgic train ride. It represents a milestone for the region, resonating with the theme of industrial heritage. Future endeavors encompass offering train rides for local events, including city festivals and castle nights.
Passengers wishing to board the steam train can do so by visiting the website www.dampflok-glauchau.de for ticket sales. Ticket prices for adults and children, respectively, stand at €39 and €19 for second-class passengers journeying from Glauchau-Reinholdshain to Wolkenburg.
