Japan establishes an Osprey military base in a southwestern region.

In a move that has sparked both support and opposition, the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force (GSDF) has opened a new base in Saga Prefecture, named Camp Saga, on July 9, 2025. The new base is set to house the GSDF's fleet of Osprey transport aircraft, previously stationed at Camp Kisarazu.

The transfer of the Ospreys from Camp Kisarazu to Camp Saga is happening in several waves, with the first V-22 Osprey transport aircraft arriving at Camp Saga on Wednesday morning. The GSDF plans to transfer 16 more Ospreys by mid-August.

The deployment of the Osprey transport aircraft in Saga, Japan, has been met with a mixed and contentious public sentiment. While some residents and local leaders have expressed concerns about safety, noise pollution, and environmental issues, others argue that the deployment is crucial for enhancing Japan's military readiness and deterrence capabilities.

These concerns are partly fueled by past accidents involving the Osprey, including a US military Osprey crash off the coast of Kagoshima Prefecture in November 2023 that resulted in the death of all eight crew members. The incident was reported by XINHUA, a Chinese state-run news agency.

On the day the first Osprey arrived at Camp Saga, protesters rallied in front of Camp Saga's main gate, calling for the "complete removal of Ospreys." Protesters carried banners and signs expressing their concerns and demanding action. However, the protest did not result in any immediate action regarding the Osprey fleet at Camp Saga.

Supporters of the deployment argue that it is essential for Japan's strategic interests, particularly in a region with rising tensions, particularly with China. The central government has attempted to alleviate fears by emphasizing strict operational protocols and financial support for the local community.

The opening of Camp Saga marks a significant expansion of the GSDF's operations in the Saga Prefecture. The new base is located on the main island of Kyushu, west of Kyushu Saga International Airport. It is important to note that the United States military also deploys Ospreys in Japan, but they are not under the control of the GSDF.

As the controversy surrounding the Osprey deployment in Saga continues, it remains to be seen how the situation will unfold. The public sentiment remains divided, with both sides presenting valid arguments. The GSDF, for its part, has emphasized its commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of the local community while carrying out its military operations.

The central government is providing financial support to alleviate local concerns about the Osprey's deployment, as they believe it is crucial for enhancing Japan's strategic interests, particularly in the face of rising tensions, particularly with China, in the finance sector. Meanwhile, opposition to the Osprey's deployment in the transportation industry, led by local residents and leaders, continues, citing safety, noise pollution, and environmental issues.
