Roadsurfer Secures €85 Million Financing Package for Global Expansion

Roadsurfer, the Munich-based campervan company, has secured a significant funding package of €85 million from Macquarie Group and BBVA to drive its global expansion, fleet growth, and digital development efforts across Europe and North America.

The financing, which consists of €60 million in asset-backed securities (ABS) from Macquarie Group and €25 million in venture debt from BBVA, will enable Roadsurfer to expand its campervan fleet, consolidate its positions in key European markets, and launch growth initiatives in North America.

According to Roadsurfer's co-founder and CEO, Markus Dickhardt, the financing is a testament to the confidence partners have in the company's business model. The funding will be used to strengthen Roadsurfer's presence in the European and North American markets, including the development of digital solutions to improve accessibility and sustainability for camper travel.

BBVA's part of the funding underscores its strategic interest in supporting high-growth digital ventures with global ambitions, particularly those that promote sustainable travel. The venture debt approach allows Roadsurfer to pursue international growth while minimizing equity dilution and maintaining operational control. Macquarie Group’s ABS financing provides flexible capital structured around the company's assets to underpin this expansion.

The agreement with BBVA is part of the European Union's InvestEU program and the European Investment Fund. The fresh capital will be used to expand Roadsurfer's fleet of around 10,000 campervans, which includes well-known brands such as VW, Mercedes-Benz, and Ford.

Roadsurfer currently operates over 90 locations in 16 countries, including Germany, the US, and Canada. The startup offers rental, subscription, and sales of campervans, as well as the Roadsurfer Spots parking platform. With this latest funding, Roadsurfer aims to become a leading global player in the outdoor travel market.

Sarah Milne, Managing Director, Securitisations at Macquarie, and Donatella Callegaris, Head of Venture & Growth Lending at BBVA in Europe, have commented on the financing, praising the constructive dialogue and shared understanding of long-term value creation that marked the collaboration between Roadsurfer, Macquarie, and BBVA.

This financing, worth €85 million, will help Roadsurfer, a Munich-based startup in the campervan industry, to grow its business globally, particularly in Europe and North America, by expanding its fleet, consolidating positions, and launching growth initiatives. The funding, provided by Macquarie Group and BBVA, is a nod to the confidence partners have in Roadsurfer's sustainable business model.
