The French political landscape is abuzz with the latest developments in an investigation surrounding the Rassemblement National (RN) party and its candidates. The Paris prosecutor's office is leading a probe into allegations of illegal campaign financing, with suspicions of illegal loans and potentially forged invoices to inflate campaign expenses for reimbursement by the state.

The investigation, which was initiated on July 3, 2024, covers the 2022 French presidential and legislative elections and the 2024 European elections. The probe comes after Marine Le Pen, the party's leader, was convicted of embezzlement of public funds earlier in the year, a conviction she has appealed.

Recent developments in the investigation saw French police raiding the RN's headquarters in Paris on July 9, 2025. The raid, which was part of the ongoing investigation, saw documents and accounting records seized. No charges have been filed yet, but the party claims the action is a political witch hunt.

RN chief Jordan Bardella described the raid as a "spectacular and unprecedented action" aimed at harassing the party. Bardella also stated that all files related to the last regional, presidential, parliamentary, and European election campaigns are now in the hands of the justice system.

The European Public Prosecutor's Office has also opened an investigation into the RN's use of public funds. This comes after the homes of several company managers were also searched as part of the investigation.

Financial investigators have raided the headquarters of Marine Le Pen's far-right party, the Rassemblement National (RN). The investigation is ongoing, and Le Pen has appealed the verdict and has turned to the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR).

Bardella, however, has called the raid a serious attack on pluralism and democracy. He emphasised that the party is fully cooperating with the investigation and will continue to do so.
