Xiaomi has expanded its electric vehicle (EV) portfolio with the launch of the Xiaomi SU7, an electric sedan that promises extreme high performance, advanced drifting capability, sophisticated driver aids, and premium smart cabin technology. The vehicle is now available at 59 stores across 29 cities in China.
Powertrain and Performance
The star of the show is the high-performance SU7 Ultra variant, equipped with three electric motors — two rear and one front — producing a combined output of around 1,526 to 1,548 horsepower and a staggering 1,770 Nm torque. This powerhouse enables ultra-fast acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in about 1.98 to 2.1 seconds and a top speed between 217 mph (350 km/h) and 250 km/h, depending on the source.
The drivetrain features an all-wheel-drive system optimized for power distribution and instant throttle and steering response, supporting both high-speed performance and precise drifting.
Battery and Charging
The SU7 Ultra houses a 93.7 kWh CATL Qilin 2.0 battery pack, delivering a claimed range of 385 miles (620 km) under China’s CLTC cycle, with realistic highway range expected to be around 230 miles (370 km). Though specific charging times are not detailed, the use of CATL Qilin 2.0 implies support for fast charging enabled by modern battery technology typical in high-performance EVs.
ADAS and Driving Features
The SU7 Ultra supports advanced drift control features, including a dedicated hydraulic handbrake system that lets drivers execute precise and varied drifting maneuvers, inspired by professional drifting techniques. The sedan comes equipped with intelligent steering systems and an all-wheel-drive layout to maintain vehicle stability and control during both drifting and regular driving conditions.
Design and Additional Features
The SU7 features high-quality materials such as carbon fiber panels, an active rear wing, and a premium interior design. It pairs a nearly road-legal body style with motorsport-inspired features, able to perform extreme gymkhana-like maneuvers while prioritizing safety and control.
The Xiaomi SU7 comes with a sizeable 105-liter frunk and boot space with 517 liters. Inside the car, there is a fridge with 4.7 liters of space, good enough for 6 cans of Coke. The vehicle also features many smart compartments for laptops or smartphones.
Variants and Pricing
In addition to the SU7 Ultra, the SU7 is available in two other versions: Standard and Pro. The Standard version uses Xiaomi Pilot Pro ADAS, boasts a single motor, RWD, 220 kW, 400 Nm torque, and a CLTC range of 700 km. It can charge 350 km in 15 minutes and costs 215,900 yuan (29,900 USD).
The Pro version, priced at 245,900 yuan (34,000 USD), offers the same price as the Tesla Model 3 in China. The SU7 Max performance version, on the other hand, has a CLTC range of 800 km and accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 2.78 seconds with a top speed of 265 km/h. It costs 299,900 yuan (41,500 USD).
Design and Development
The Xiaomi SU7 was designed by the team around Li Tianyuan, Xiaomi's Head of Design, who joined the company from BMW. Chris Bangle, a former BMW Group Chief of Design, praised the Xiaomi SU7 and works as a Xiaomi Auto Design consultant. James Qiu, who previously worked at Mercedes-Benz, is the exterior designer for the Xiaomi SU7.
Deliveries of the Xiaomi SU7 will start at the end of April. The SU7 supports Apple CarPlay and iPad connectivity, and it sits on Xiaomi's Modena platform with dimensions of 4997/1963/1455 mm (L/W/H) and a wheelbase of 3000 mm.
Xiaomi also announced Xiaomi Pilot Max, which uses both pure vision and lidar, and features the city NOA pilot-assisted driving. It will be tested in April and available in China by May, using two Nvidia Drive Orin chips with 508 tops. Xiaomi Pilot Pro, based on pure vision and similar to Tesla, uses the Nvidia Drive Orin chip with 254 tops computing power.
The electric vehicle (EV), Xiaomi SU7, has multiple variants that cater to varying consumer preferences and budgets. Besides the high-performance SU7 Ultra, there are Standard and Pro versions available. The Standard version is equipped with a single motor, RWD, and a CLTC range of 700 km, priced at 215,900 yuan (29,900 USD). The Pro version, costing 245,900 yuan (34,000 USD), offers the same price as the Tesla Model 3 in China. The SU7 Max performance version, on the other hand, boasts a CLTC range of 800 km and accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 2.78 seconds with a top speed of 265 km/h, priced at 299,900 yuan (41,500 USD). These EVs, falling under the automotive industry, are powered by advanced technology, ensuring a smooth and efficient driving experience. The finance sector will have an interesting role to play as these cost-effective choices in the electric transportation sector challenge traditional automotive and lifestyle norms.
