Criticism Mounts Over Vehicle Congestion: Automobile Club Voices Concerns on Excessive Traffic - Insufficient space for large vehicles?
Wish you could catch some z's on those long motorway drives? Think again, mate! The Auto Club Europa (ACE) has found a whopping shortage of truck parking spaces on German autobahns, resulting in a high-risk situation for all road users.
From mid-April to early June, ACE inspectors counted trucks parked at rest areas each evening after 8:30 pm. The scenic southern Berlin Ring (A10) and the A24 in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern were particular danger zones, thanks to improperly parked heavy goods vehicles lurking about.
Peak overcrowding was seen at rest areas like Eichelborn Nord on the A4 in Thuringia (60% crowded) and Galgenberg Nord on the A38 (58% crowded). However, Hermsdorfer Kreuz West escaped the congestion.
Last year, the regional management of the federal motorway company acknowledged a high utilization of facilities, especially on the east-west axes A 4 and A 38. The Thuringian transportation industry association also demands more truck parking spaces on autobahns.
ACE's snapshot truck count revealed a mind-bending overcrowding at 31 inspected rest areas in eastern German states. With only 1,412 available spaces and 2,168 parked trucks, the overcrowding level stood at around 50%. On 21 of these rest areas, dangerous traffic situations, particularly during nighttime with limited visibility, cropped up, with trucks often obstructing entrance and exit lanes.
According to a 2023 survey by the Federal Highway Research Institute, there's a nationwide shortage of over 19,500 regular truck parking spaces on autobahns. VEDA, on the other hand, predicts a shortage of around 40,000 spaces. Just over 3,000 spaces were added from 2018 to 2023, as per the Federal Ministry of Transport.

Enrichment data:According to the Auto Club Europa and VEDA, Germany faces a shortage of approximately 31,000 truck parking spaces on autobahns to efficiently address overcrowding at rest areas[2]. This figure is based on an analysis of updated data, reports from relevant authorities across German federal states, and night censuses on selected road sections outside official parking lots.
The associations underline that without a strategic change—namely, the establishment of autohofs (truck service areas) outside the autobahns—Germany will continue to wrestle with this shortage for the foreseeable future. At the current pace of adding 1,500 new parking spaces annually, it would take around two decades to close this gap[2]. Hence, the requirement for 31,000 additional truck parking spaces highlights the extent of the overcrowding problem on Germany's autobahns, according to these organizations.
Community policy initiatives may need to address the lack of truck parking spaces on German autobahns, as it is a matter that could extend to employment policy in related industries such as transportation and automotive. Finance policy discussions should also consider the economic impact of gridlock resulting from overcrowding on these road networks.
