Increased train services planned for Switzerland during notable occasions in the year 2025
Rewritten:
Get ready for some major train action this year, because SBB is pulling out all the stops! With numerous special events on the horizon, they're beefing up their regular services and rolling out extra cars or entire compositions to offer more seating, as they shared on Tuesday. So, where's all this extra train capacity headed?
First up, we have the Eurovision Song Contest (ESC), happening from May 13th to 17th in Basel. To cater to the influx of music fans, 85 additional trains will be put into service.
Next, the UEFA Women's Championship (Women's Euro) is set to take place from July 2nd to the 27th in various locations across Switzerland—including Bern, Geneva, Sion, Thun, Basel, Lucerne, St. Gallen, and Zurich. In preparation, SBB will roll out around 300 extra trains to and from these cities.
Beyond these high-profile events, SBB will also be running special trains to regular annual festivals like the Federal Gymnastics Festival (which takes place in Lausanne from June 12th to 22nd this year). Additionally, the Swiss Federal Wrestling Festival and the Alpine Games will take place in Mollis (GL) from August 29th to 31st, with 160 extra trains serving these events.
In total, SBB plans to run approximately 1,600 additional trains this year, with extra trains also provided for popular events like the Street Parade in Zurich, Swiss Skills in Bern, and assorted open-air concerts and festivals.
But wait, there's more! For some events, like the Women's EURO, the ticket to the event will function as your train ticket from anywhere in Switzerland. The same deal applies to the Wrestling Festival and the Alpine Games. Keep your eyes peeled for additional special ticket offers throughout the year!
- In 2025, the Federal Gymnastics Festival, scheduled from June 12th to 22nd in Lausanne, will require additional transportation with special trains running to cater to the festival-goers.
